It's been a good couple of years (i think...) but i feel like it's time to move on. My interest in weird shit has dwindled and i no longer have that drive to search for new and awful things to share. I wouldn't call this an end to Visual Massacre, more like a long, a really long hiatus. If i do decide to bring this back it will come back in a different form. Reborn with a better design because blogger sites look like shit and with a new stronger direction and more contributors. So bookmark this bitch and check back every now and then and who knows, you might find something new again. Something bigger and better.

How a magazine cover is made.

"After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.

On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO's. Canon's sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4x5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens.

Many thanks to Rob Schultz for allowing me to invade his office and literally shoot over his shoulder.

"For the lead video off Passion Pit's eagerly anticipated debut LP, 3 of our creatives banded together into a multi-headed directing beast. A beast we now call Hydra.

Inspired by the worn away layers of street art, advertising, and flyers plastered around downtown New York, they set out to create a world of distressed, animated paper. Think: Cases of spray glue, 2 video projectors, a couple of workhorse color copiers, untold reams of paper, 2 mannequins, 4 mexican wrestling masks, a stage full of carboard Moogs, and one 1971 Charger, covered in 3000 sheets of torn flyers.

The video, shot on the new handheld Canon 5d DSLR, was edited, tracked and composited in a normal post workflow. Then, every other frame, some 4305 of them, were printed out, crumpled up, spray mounted in stacks, and then reshot on homemade animation stands. A month of long nights, razor cuts, toxic fumes, and a terrabyte of stills later, we came out with this.
